TOXMED SRL

Italy Cagliari· 11:39 PM

TOXMED SRL is an innovative academic spin-off of the University of Cagliari, established in 2018 to translate the expertise and scientific know-how built through university research into commercially available analytical and toxicological services. The company operates from two facilities in Sardinia, Italy: the primary GLP Test Facility at Building 5, Science and Technology Park of Sardinia (Parco Scientifico e Tecnologico della Sardegna), Località Piscinamanna, 09050 Pula (CA), and a secondary office at the University Campus of Monserrato, Cagliari. Bridging academic rigour with applied laboratory practice, TOXMED employs a multidisciplinary team of toxicologists, analytical chemists, researchers, and university professors who bring both regulatory knowledge and advanced instrumentation to client projects across toxicology, agrifood, and agrochemical sectors. The laboratory's service portfolio is structured around five core pillars: toxicology, agrifood testing, research and development, computational (Q)SAR toxicity modelling, and GLP-certified regulatory study management. The toxicology division encompasses clinical-forensic toxicology, occupational exposure assessment, and chemical analysis for the characterisation and quantification of xenobiotic substances and their metabolites in a range of biological matrices including blood, urine, and hair. TOXMED is especially recognised for forensic toxicology, including the identification and quantification of illicit drugs, controlled substances, and psychoactive metabolites in biological samples for judicial, workplace, and clinical purposes. In the agrifood sector, TOXMED provides chemical analysis and safety evaluations designed to verify product compliance with applicable European regulatory frameworks. This includes the assessment of pesticide residues, xenobiotic contamination, and active-substance characterisation in food matrices and agricultural commodities. Clients include agribusinesses, food producers, and supply-chain operators requiring documented evidence that their products meet safety standards. The laboratory also conducts active molecule degradation studies and supports process innovation within agrifood production chains, assisting manufacturers in improving the quality and healthiness of their outputs. A defining and distinctive activity of TOXMED is the execution of GLP-compliant studies (studi BPL — Buona Pratica di Laboratorio) for the regulatory registration of plant protection products (prodotti fitosanitari), biocides, biostimulants, and detergent actives under European and national schemes. The Toxmed GLP Facility Test Center holds certification from the Italian Ministry of Health and carries ACCREDIA accreditation under laboratory number 02282. This formal GLP accreditation is a prerequisite for studies submitted to competent authorities during the authorization process for new active substances and formulations, placing TOXMED among the limited pool of certified Italian contract laboratories capable of generating data acceptable for regulatory dossiers under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and Plant Protection Products Regulation (EC 1107/2009). TOXMED's research and development division works on the design and optimisation of novel analytical methodologies and the development of new formulations of plant protection products, biocides, and biostimulants. This R&D capability allows the lab to handle non-routine analytical challenges and serve clients who require bespoke protocols beyond established standard methods. Working in close partnership with the University of Cagliari, TOXMED maintains access to academic networks, advanced scientific instrumentation, and interdisciplinary expertise spanning chemistry, toxicology, and environmental science. The laboratory also offers in silico toxicity assessment using Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) modelling. QSAR enables prediction of the toxic potential of organic compounds from their molecular structure, supporting early-stage safety evaluation and reducing reliance on animal testing. This service is particularly valuable for regulatory submissions under REACH, the Biocidal Products Regulation, and the Plant Protection Products Regulation, where alternative methods to animal studies are increasingly required or incentivised by European competent authorities. With its dual footprint at the Pula Technology Park and the Monserrato University Campus, TOXMED combines state-of-the-art analytical infrastructure with proximity to academic and regulatory expertise. The quality assurance framework underpinning the GLP facility ensures full traceability, data integrity, and audit-readiness for all study outputs. TOXMED represents a credible and specialised testing partner for agrochemical manufacturers, food and beverage producers, pharmaceutical companies, forensic authorities, and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) seeking access to GLP-certified analytical services, toxicological consultancy, and advanced computational safety assessment without the overhead of maintaining in-house regulated laboratory capabilities.
