About

Microchem Lab Services (Pty) Ltd is an independent, SANAS-accredited contract testing laboratory founded in 2007 when its managing director, Raymond Hartley, acquired the Woolworths in-house analytical laboratory in Cape Town. Over the years the business has grown into one of the most advanced chemical and microbiological testing facilities on the African continent, acquiring Consulting Microbiological Laboratory (CML) in Benoni, Gauteng, in 2009 and expanding further into Limpopo with a new SANAS-accredited facility launched in Hoedspruit in early 2026. In 2024 Microchem joined the AGQ Labs Group, a multinational analytical services organisation with operations across agriculture, food, mining, pharmaceuticals, and life sciences, further strengthening its technical and international reach. The laboratory serves clients in the food and beverage, agriculture, pharmaceutical, water, and environmental sectors across southern Africa and beyond.

Microbiology testing forms one of Microchem's core service pillars and encompasses routine food microbiology, food pathogen analyses, environmental hygiene services, shelf-life testing, and molecular pathogen detection. The laboratory uses advanced automated platforms including Tempo (bioMérieux) and VIDAS immunoassay systems alongside real-time PCR instrumentation for rapid and highly sensitive detection of pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli O157, and other indicator organisms. Environmental hygiene services extend beyond the food sector to include GMP-compliant surface, air, and water monitoring for pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, providing clients with a data-driven view of contamination risk in their production environments.

The chemistry division delivers a comprehensive suite of nutritional and compositional analyses aligned to South African food labelling regulation R.146. Services include macronutrient profiling (protein, total and crude fat, carbohydrates), detailed fatty acid profiles, sugar and polyol (sugar alcohol) analysis, cholesterol, crude fibre, vitamin testing, elemental analysis, and salt and Brix determination. Beyond standard label-claim parameters, the laboratory also tests for a wide range of contaminants and quality indicators relevant to the food industry, including mycotoxins (particularly aflatoxins), melamine, marine biotoxins, histamine, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN), sulphur dioxide, free fatty acid content, and peroxide value. Water testing and olive oil quality assessments round out the chemistry offering.

Multi-residue pesticide analysis is a strategic specialism at Microchem, particularly for South African fruit exporters supplying the European Union and other regulated markets with strict maximum residue limits (MRLs). The laboratory screens for more than 300 pesticide compounds across 15 SANAS-accredited commodity matrices — including pome fruits, stone fruits, table grapes, citrus, small berries, pomegranates, avocado, banana, mango, rooibos tea, and dried fruits — using three complementary analytical platforms: LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, and HS-GC/MS. The QuEChERS multi-residue extraction method is employed throughout, with a limit of quantification of 0.010 mg/kg (10 ppb). Specific analyte groups covered include dithiocarbamates (as CS2), ethephon, fosetyl-Al and phosphonic acid, glyphosate and AMPA, chlorates and perchlorates, and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Method performance is validated through participation in the FAPAS (Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme) international proficiency programme. A remote pesticide service depot in Tzaneen, Limpopo, and the new Hoedspruit facility serve the Limpopo and Mpumalanga citrus and tropical fruit-growing regions.

Microchem's pharmaceutical division is accredited by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and operates in full compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The pharmaceutical microbiological testing suite includes sterility testing (USP <71>) conducted in ISO-classified cleanrooms, bacterial endotoxin (pyrogen) testing by the gel-clot method (USP <85>), microbial limits testing for total viable count and specified organisms including E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus (USP <61>/<62>), preservative efficacy testing for multi-dose pharmaceutical formulations, and environmental monitoring of cleanroom and manufacturing areas. All methods are aligned with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), European Pharmacopoeia (EP), and British Pharmacopoeia (BP), supporting multinational batch-release requirements and regulatory submissions.

The laboratory's analytical infrastructure underpins an exceptionally broad method portfolio. Instrumentation includes gas chromatography (GC), GC-MS, GC-MS/MS triple quadrupole, ICP-OES for multi-element and heavy-metal analysis, HPLC, LC-MS/MS triple quadrupole, and real-time PCR systems. A laboratory information management system (LIMS) underpins chain-of-custody, sample tracking, and data integrity across all sites. Quality assurance is maintained through SANAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (accreditation numbers T0393 and T0489), SAHPRA GMP accreditation, and participation in international proficiency testing schemes. Clients have access to a secure online sample login portal and real-time result tracking.

Microchem operates four main service locations in South Africa: its Cape Town headquarters at Stikland Industrial (Western Cape), a full-service laboratory in Benoni (Gauteng), the recently commissioned Hoedspruit facility (Limpopo), and a sample depot in Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape). Dedicated sales teams in Cape Town and Gauteng provide consultation on method selection, interpretation of analytical results, nutritional labelling compliance, food safety programmes, and environmental hygiene management. This combination of national reach, SANAS and SAHPRA accreditation, extensive instrumentation, and nearly two decades of African food industry experience makes Microchem a credible and authoritative testing partner for producers, exporters, retailers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers operating across the region.
