The Laboratoire Central d'Analyses et d'Essais (LCAE), or Central Laboratory for Analysis and Testing, is a Tunisian public non-administrative institution operating under the country's Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy. Established as a national reference body since 1996, LCAE provides analytical, testing, calibration, and inspection services to public and private sector clients across Tunisia and the broader region. The laboratory operates from two principal sites — the main campus at Montfleury in Tunis and a second centre in Sousse — together hosting more than a dozen specialised technical divisions covering food products, water and the environment, industrial products, legal metrology, and precious metals. Its mission combines conformity assessment, quality control support for regulated industries, and participation in international proficiency testing through a dedicated Proficiency Testing Unit (Unité d'Essai d'Aptitude, U.EdA). In the domain of food product testing, LCAE operates several purpose-built laboratories encompassing microbiological analysis of foods (including the Laboratory of Food and Water Microbiology), beverages and preserves, plant-origin products and honey, dairy products and fats, and a specific laboratory for histamine and colorants. Microbiological scope includes enumeration and detection of Bacillus cereus presumptif per ISO 7932, yeasts and moulds per NF V08-059, as well as general indicators of food hygiene and stability testing of appertised (canned and heat-treated) products. Honey composition analysis is an explicitly accredited parameter. The Sousse site also carries accreditation for food product microbiology and clean water microbiology, extending geographic coverage for clients in central and southern Tunisia. The laboratory's Division of Contaminants and Additives (Division des Contaminants et Additifs, DCA) handles a broad portfolio of chemical food safety analyses. Pesticide residue testing covers organophosphate (OP), organochlorine (OC), and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds across matrices including water, milk and infant products, and cereals and derivatives. Heavy metal analysis — principally mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) — is conducted on food and water matrices. LCAE's mycotoxin laboratory tests for aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 in cereals and derivatives, dried fruits, and associated products. Additional analytes within this division include preservatives, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HAP/PAH), vitamins, biogenic amines (histamine in fishery products), and dioxins through the Residues of Pesticides–PCB and Dioxins laboratory. A separate laboratory addresses radioactive elements in food and environmental samples. The Water and Environment Division (Division Environnement, Eau et Produits Industriels, DEPI) provides physico-chemical and microbiological analysis of both potable water and wastewater (eaux résiduaires). Accredited scope at the Montfleury site includes physicochemistry of clean and waste water and microbiology of clean water, supporting compliance testing against Tunisian national standards as well as international benchmarks. The DEPI also serves industrial products and inspection activities, making LCAE a single-stop resource for manufacturers and regulatory bodies needing product conformity verification. Metrology services constitute a significant pillar of LCAE's portfolio. Dedicated laboratories cover mass metrology, temperature and humidity metrology, pressure metrology, dimensional metrology, and volume and volumic mass (density) metrology. A legal metrology department handles industrial weighing (Métrologie Légale–Pesage Industriel), supporting trade measurement compliance for industrial operators. It should be noted that calibration accreditations in the metrology division were temporarily withdrawn in May 2024 pending reconnection of reference standards to foreign providers; a reinstatement request was filed with TUNAC in July 2024. Clients requiring calibration services should confirm current scope directly with the laboratory. Beyond food and environment, LCAE's service catalogue extends to cosmetics and household products (Laboratoire des Produits Cosmétiques et d'Entretien) including microbiological testing of cosmetics, a molecular biology laboratory (Laboratoire de Biologie Moléculaire) for advanced genomic and species-identification analyses, and a precious metals testing service. The industrial products and inspection arm supports conformity assessment across manufacturing sectors. This breadth positions LCAE as a multidisciplinary testing partner able to serve food producers, water utilities, cosmetics manufacturers, industrial companies, and regulatory agencies from a single institution. Quality and accreditation underpin LCAE's credibility as a testing partner. The laboratory holds ten accreditations in the field of analysis issued by TUNAC (Tunisian Accreditation Council, Conseil National d'Accréditation), the national accreditation body, with recognition traceable to international frameworks. Accreditation reference LCAE * 1-0002 covers scope extensions confirmed in 2025. Most recently, in June and July 2025, LCAE successfully completed renewal and extension evaluations at both the Montfleury (Tunis) and Sousse sites according to ISO/IEC 17025 — the internationally recognised standard for testing and calibration laboratory competence. The 2025 cycle extended accredited scope to additional microbiological parameters at the food microbiology laboratory. LCAE also participates in international scientific cooperation, including agreements with bodies such as Algeria's Office National de Métrologie Légale (signed October 2023), and engages regularly in World Metrology Day activities, reflecting its active role in regional scientific standardisation.
