Founded in 1998, AQUABIO is a French environmental testing and consulting laboratory (bureau d'études) dedicated to the hydrobiological characterization of aquatic environments. The laboratory's core mission is to produce, valorize, and expertly interpret hydrobiological data in order to assess the ecological status of rivers, streams, lakes, and other water bodies. AQUABIO serves a broad range of clients including public authorities, infrastructure developers, environmental engineering firms, and water management agencies that require rigorous scientific assessment of aquatic ecosystems in compliance with French and European environmental regulations, including the Water Framework Directive (WFD). AQUABIO offers comprehensive bioindication (bioindication) services covering all major biological quality elements used to characterize the ecological status of surface waters. For rivers and streams, the laboratory conducts macroinvertebrate sampling and analysis in accordance with multiple French and European standards: IBGN (NF T90-350) for small watercourses, MPCE (NF T90-333) for medium and large rivers, MGCE (XP T90-337), and IBGA protocols. Following field sampling, laboratory personnel perform extraction, sorting, and taxonomic identification of macroinvertebrate communities, with subsequent data analysis according to NF T90-388 to generate standardized biological index scores that reflect the health of benthic communities. Diatom analysis forms another key pillar of AQUABIO's service portfolio. These unicellular microalgae are highly sensitive bioindicators of water quality conditions, particularly organic pollution and nutrient enrichment. AQUABIO carries out diatom sampling in rivers in accordance with NF T90-354, as well as sampling in lakes and reservoirs using experimental protocols. Laboratory work includes sample processing, slide preparation, mounting, and microscopic identification to calculate the Indice Biologique Diatomique (IBD), a standardized index for assessing ecological status. The laboratory also conducts phytoplankton assessments, extending its microalgal expertise to planktonic communities in standing waters. Fish community surveys represent a further specialized capability. AQUABIO employs electrofishing techniques (pêche électrique) in accordance with NF EN 14011 to sample fish populations in rivers and streams, enabling calculation of the Indice Poisson Rivière (IPR and IPR+) to quantify the degree of alteration of fish assemblages relative to reference conditions. In lakes and reservoirs, the laboratory uses standardized multi-mesh gill net surveys in accordance with NF EN 14757. AQUABIO also carries out rescue fishing operations (pêche de sauvegarde) during civil engineering works — including road, rail, and waterway construction projects — to protect fish populations ahead of habitat disturbance, and performs individual health-status assessments of fish specimens during these interventions. Macrophyte surveys complete the suite of biological quality element assessments. Macrophytes — aquatic and amphibious vascular plants, mosses, and visible algal colonies — are sampled according to NF T90-395 for rivers and NF T90-328 for lakes. Laboratory identification to species level allows calculation of the Indice Biologique Macrophytique de Rivière (IBMR) for streams and the Indice Biologique Macrophytique Lacustre (IBML) for lakes, both used to assess trophic state. Additionally, AQUABIO conducts oligochaete worm (oligochètes) analyses of sediment communities using the IOBS (Indice Oligochètes de Bioindication des Sédiments) for rivers and the IOBL (Indice Oligochètes de Bioindication Lacustre) for lakes, both governed by NF T90-393, providing insight into sediment quality and organic contamination levels. Nearly all of AQUABIO's methodologies across its operational sites are accredited by COFRAC (Comité Français d'Accréditation), the French national accreditation body and a signatory of the multilateral recognition arrangements of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and European Accreditation (EA). COFRAC accreditation for testing laboratories is granted under ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for testing laboratory competence. In addition, the bureau d'études holds ministerial approval as a laboratory performing analyses in the field of water and aquatic environments (laboratoire effectuant des analyses dans le domaine de l'eau et des milieux aquatiques), granted by the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Solidarity (Ministère de la Transition écologique et solidaire) — a regulatory prerequisite for official monitoring under French water law. AQUABIO actively participates in French national standardization work, contributing to AFNOR technical committees T95F (Bioindication des milieux aquatiques — Bioindication of Aquatic Environments) and T95E (Écotoxicologie — Ecotoxicology). This involvement positions the laboratory at the forefront of evolving methodological standards for aquatic bioassessment in France. Personnel qualification standards are exceptionally rigorous: individual field staff undergo a demanding habilitation process that can extend up to two years before being permitted to operate independently on site, ensuring the highest levels of taxonomic expertise and sampling reproducibility across all projects and underpinning the reliability of the ecological data delivered to clients.
