CATAS SpA is Italy's premier testing and certification laboratory for the wood and furniture industry, widely recognised as the largest European laboratory for testing and applied research in this sector. Headquartered in San Giovanni al Natisone (Udine, Italy) with a second operating centre in Lissone (Monza), the organisation operates more than 10,000 m² of laboratory space and employs a multidisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, mathematicians, and applied researchers. Founded as a polo d'eccellenza (centre of excellence) for the legno-arredo (wood and furnishings) sector, CATAS carries out over 50,000 tests per year across its facilities, serving manufacturers of finished furniture, component suppliers, wood-based panel producers, and importers who require compliance evidence for domestic and international markets.

The laboratory's core offering covers physical and mechanical testing of finished furniture and semi-finished goods. Durability, resistance, and safety tests are performed on seating, tables, storage units, beds, office furniture, children's furniture, and outdoor pieces in accordance with the relevant European (EN) and international (ISO) standards. Among the most frequently applied standards are EN 581-2 and EN 581-3 for camping seating and tables for domestic and collective use, EN 16121, EN 14073, EN 527, EN 1730, and a wide suite of ISO 7170 and related methods. Mechanical performance parameters—load capacity, fatigue endurance, dimensional stability, and hardware fitting strength (including hinges, drawer slides, castors, and wall-fixing devices)—are evaluated on both finished articles and individual components.

Chemical and biological analysis constitutes a major pillar of CATAS's capability. The formaldehyde section is one of its most internationally recognised specialisms: emission measurements are conducted using European methods (EN ISO 12460-5 perforator, EN ISO 12460-3 gas analysis, EN 717-1 large-chamber), Japanese method (JIS A 1460 desiccator), and US methods (ASTM D 6007 small chamber and ASTM E 1333 large chamber). This breadth makes CATAS the only Italian laboratory recognised by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for formaldehyde emission control and certification from wood-based panels under the California Air Resources Board (CARB) ATCM programme. VOC emission testing is also offered, with determination protocols extending over 28-day chamber cycles; a dedicated CQA VOC Low Emission mark is available based on product-family sampling. Lead content analysis in children's furniture is conducted under approval from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Surface and finish testing is handled by a dedicated surfaces section (sezione superfici). CATAS evaluates the resistance and quality of furniture surface coatings and finishes against abrasion, impact, staining, moisture, heat, light (UV aging), and chemical reagents, following EN 15186, EN 15187, EN 12720, EN 12721, EN 12722, EN 438, and related standards. Decorative and functional coatings—lacquers, laminates, foils, veneers, solid wood surfaces—all fall within scope. Adhesive performance evaluation is also part of this portfolio, including testing under recently published standards such as UNI 11982:2025 for furniture adhesives, which CATAS helped bring into focus through a co-hosted UNICHIM-CATAS webinar series.

Fire reaction testing is a further area of statutory recognition. Since 2000, CATAS has been authorised by the Italian Ministry of the Interior (Ministero dell'Interno) to issue fire-reaction test certificates required for ministerial homologation, covering upholstered furniture, mattresses, curtains, wood-based panels, and interior finish materials. Methods include EN ISO 11925-2 ignitability, cone calorimetry, radiant panel testing per EN ISO 9239-1, and specific Italian national protocols for upholstered seating and bedding. CATAS technicians actively participate in the UNI national working group on combustion behaviour, ensuring methodological currency as standards evolve.

Beyond laboratory work, CATAS operates as a product certification body under EN ISO/IEC 17065 (ACCREDIA accreditation number 215B) and administers the CQA–CATAS Quality Award, one of the most established third-party product quality marks in the European furniture market. The organisation was the first Italian certification body to achieve ACCREDIA accreditation for CARB formaldehyde certification procedures and is listed by BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) as an approved testing laboratory, supporting North American market access for European producers. Environmental sustainability services include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies—both full and simplified—to support eco-label declarations and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

CATAS has held ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from ACCREDIA (number 00024) continuously since 1991, encompassing a broad scope of physical, mechanical, and chemical test methods. The organisation plays an active role in international standardisation as a recurring host of ISO/TC 136 'Furniture' plenary meetings and contributes to CEN technical committees drafting European furniture norms.
