AQUON (organisatie voor wateronderzoek en advies — organization for water research and advice) is the Netherlands' foremost full-service water research laboratory, delivering comprehensive water quality insights to water authorities, municipalities, government agencies, and private companies. Headquartered in Houten, Utrecht, AQUON serves nine regional water boards spanning central and southern Netherlands — Aa en Maas, De Dommel, Schieland en Krimpenerwaard, Delfland, Rijnland, Hollandse Delta, Brabantse Delta, Rivierenland, and De Stichtse Rijnlanden. AQUON was established through the consolidation of four water board laboratories: Delta Waterlab, the Gemeenschappelijk Waterschapslaboratorium (Joint Water Board Laboratory), and the individual laboratories of Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland and Waterschap Rivierenland. This merger created one of the largest dedicated water research organisations in the Netherlands, bringing together complementary regional expertise and standardising analytical methods at scale. Today AQUON employs more than 200 specialists in chemistry, biology, ecology, and laboratory science, processing over 30,000 sampling points, generating more than 85,000 individual analyses, and producing approximately 1,000,000 test results and reports annually for its clients.
AQUON's Chemistry division performs both organic and inorganic chemical analysis on surface water, groundwater, wastewater treatment effluent, and water sediment (waterbodem) matrices. A flagship service is the laboratory's Target Screening platform, capable of scanning a single water sample for more than 3,000 water-soluble substances in a single analytical run — enabling broad surveillance for emerging contaminants alongside routine regulatory parameters. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) analysis is a major and rapidly growing service area, addressing Dutch and European regulatory requirements for monitoring these persistent substances in surface water and drinking water catchments. Inorganic analysis routinely covers heavy metals and other priority substances required under the Water Framework Directive (WFD/KRW). ELISA-based toxin screening is also offered, enabling rapid detection of biologically active compounds such as cyanotoxins produced by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) during bloom events.
The Hydrobiology division extends AQUON's analytical scope into ecological water quality assessment, combining classical field survey methods with advanced molecular techniques. Specialists conduct macrofauna (macroinvertebrate) surveys to evaluate the biological integrity of aquatic ecosystems, map blue-green algae distribution and abundance, and assess aquatic flora communities. Environmental DNA (eDNA) detection is a key innovation area: AQUON has developed and deployed eDNA-based assays that allow rare or invasive aquatic species to be identified directly from water samples without the need for physical capture or direct observation. These molecular ecological methods support biodiversity monitoring programmes and early-warning surveillance for invasive non-native species, and combine with physical and chemical data to deliver integrated ecological status assessments as required under the WFD.
The Sampling and Logistics division ensures that analytical quality is maintained from the point of collection through to the laboratory. AQUON operates field sampling at over 30,000 locations annually across the regions it serves, with trained personnel following standardised chain-of-custody and sampling protocol requirements to preserve sample integrity. A 24/7 emergency response sampling service is available for pollution incidents, chemical spills, and urgent regulatory compliance situations — a critical capability for water authority clients who must respond rapidly when water quality emergencies threaten public health or ecological integrity. Satellite service offices in Den Bosch and Dordrecht extend field reach into the southern Netherlands, supplementing the central Houten laboratory hub.
In 2024 AQUON completed a major facility investment, consolidating its former laboratories in Tiel and Leiden into a purpose-built laboratory campus at Brede Hoon 16, 3991 CW Houten, Utrecht. Designed by Vakwerk Architecten in collaboration with laboratory design specialist Labadvies, the facility incorporates containment zones of varying chemical and biological safety levels matched to the processes performed in each area. The campus layout — organised around two internal courtyards with a central meeting, café, and office area — was optimised for workflow clarity and cross-disciplinary communication between chemistry, hydrobiology, and support functions. Satellite operational points in Den Bosch and Dordrecht remain active to maintain regional field sampling coverage across southern Netherlands.
All sampling and analytical activities at AQUON are conducted under RvA (Raad voor Accreditatie — Dutch Accreditation Council) accreditation number L 553, in conformance with EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the internationally recognised standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. This accreditation encompasses both field sampling operations and laboratory analysis, ensuring that measurement methods, staff qualifications, equipment calibration, reference materials, and quality management systems are independently verified against rigorous technical requirements. AQUON's institutional mandate explicitly requires operation with full impartiality and independence from any commercial, financial, or personal influence over analytical outcomes — a foundational requirement for a laboratory whose results directly underpin public water management decisions and regulatory enforcement.
