Testing labs in Río Negro

CIATI (Centro de Investigación y Asistencia Técnica a la Industria, or Center for Research and Technical Assistance to Industry) is an independent, self-financed civil association and accredited analytical laboratory headquartered in Villa Regina, Río Negro, in Argentina's Patagonia region. Founded in 1978 as a government-linked entity and restructured in 1997 as a non-profit civil association with private-sector governance, CIATI has grown into one of Argentina's most comprehensive third-party testing, technical assistance, and research-and-development centers. The organization serves more than 700 private companies and public bodies — including the governments of Río Negro and Neuquén provinces, INTA (National Institute of Agricultural Technology), and CAFI (Association of Processors and Exporters of Río Negro and Neuquén Fruits) — generating approximately 2.5 million analytical results per year. CIATI's food and agricultural testing laboratory offers a broad suite of analytical services that underpin export compliance and domestic food safety. Food chemistry analysis covers nutritional composition (moisture, protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, sugars, ash), food additives, preservatives, colorants, and physicochemical parameters required for nutritional labeling under SENASA and ANMAT regulations. The center is especially recognized for its agrochemical and veterinary residue testing, screening more than 350 active-ingredient pesticides across a wide range of food matrices including fresh and processed fruits, vegetables, citrus juices, wines, grains, meats, and dairy products. These analyses employ liquid chromatography coupled to triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection (GC-MS/MS), enabling sensitive multi-residue methods that meet international tolerance standards. Heavy metal determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) rounds out chemical contaminant testing. CIATI holds registration as a designated laboratory under SENASA's National Laboratory Network and is included in ANMAT's Federal Food Laboratory Network, and also carries GAFTA (Grain and Feed Trade Association) certification for grain and commodity analysis. Full microbiological analytical services for food quality and safety are a core competency at CIATI, covering total aerobic plate count, coliforms, Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, yeasts, and molds across food, water, and environmental matrices. In 2026 the center expanded its microbiological capabilities to include dairy sector testing, broadening coverage of the regional agro-food industry. CIATI performs compositional and authenticity analysis on juices and wines, a role with roots in the 1980s when the center was established in part to resolve quality disputes on Argentine citrus juice exports. Its 2025 membership in the GLOBALG.A.P. community further underscores the center's commitment to farm-to-fork food safety assurance and support for producers seeking internationally recognized agricultural certification. CIATI operates a second specialized facility at the Centenario Technological Park (Parque Tecnológico Centenario) in Neuquén province, strategically positioned to serve the active oil and gas sector of the Vaca Muerta basin. This laboratory conducts environmental and industrial analysis on liquid effluents, process and groundwater, surface water, solid and semi-solid waste, sludge, soils, and sediments, measuring physicochemical parameters, total petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy metals, and ecotoxicological bioassays. The Centenario unit also evaluates the quality of hydraulic fracturing sand (fracking proppant), a materials characterization service that supports the upstream oil and gas supply chain. Environmental biology assessments and environmental impact evaluation complete the hydrocarbon and industrial portfolio. CIATI is a member of Cluster Vaca Muerta, the industry network for service companies operating in that energy-producing region. The center additionally handles judicial sample testing for forensic and litigation purposes, with chain-of-custody protocols supporting official and legal proceedings. CIATI was the first laboratory in South America to obtain ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, granted by Spain's national accreditation body ENAC (Entidad Nacional de Acreditación) in 1999. As an ENAC signatory to the Multilateral Recognition Agreements (MRA) of ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation) and EA (European co-operation for Accreditation), test reports issued under CIATI's accreditation are recognized and accepted in more than 60 countries. The scope of accreditation spans over 800 analytes and parameters across food and environmental matrices — one of the broadest laboratory accreditation scopes in Argentina. Japanese customs authorities recognize CIATI analyses as equivalent to their own domestic testing standards, facilitating market access for Argentine agricultural exporters. Beyond ISO/IEC 17025, CIATI's integrated management system carries ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 certification, and the center holds GMP+ B11 laboratory certification for services to the feed-safety chain. CIATI operates with a multidisciplinary team of more than 100 professionals spanning chemical engineering, industrial engineering, food science, biochemistry, molecular biology, agronomy, ecology, environmental science, and systems engineering. The primary facility at Avenida B Mitre 175, Villa Regina serves the Río Negro fruit-growing and agro-industrial valley; the Centenario facility at Expedicionarios del Desierto 1310 serves the Patagonian energy and industrial corridor. Sample confidentiality is maintained through a barcode-based sample tracking system. Clients access services through a self-service portal (servicios.ciati.com.ar) for sample template creation, submission tracking, and results download. Mobile laboratory and field sampling services extend reach to remote agricultural and industrial sites. With more than 25 years under its current civil-association structure, CIATI has established itself as a neutral, technically rigorous partner for both the private sector and Argentine regulatory authorities. The provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén have designated CIATI as a reference laboratory for official control purposes. Its membership in the SENASA National Laboratory Network, ANMAT's Federal Food Laboratory Network, and Argentina's Ministry of Science Red CEN-TEC (national technology center network), combined with GLOBALG.A.P. community membership, reflects deep integration into both national regulatory infrastructure and international quality assurance frameworks, making CIATI a credible and internationally recognized testing partner for agriculture, food export compliance, environmental monitoring, and industrial analysis.
