NEIKER — Instituto Vasco de Investigación y Desarrollo Agrario (Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development) — is a public technological research, development, and innovation centre established by the Basque Government to serve the agricultural, livestock, and forestry sectors in Spain's Basque Country. The Laboratory for Conservation of Natural Resources (Laboratorio de Conservación de los Recursos Naturales) provides soil and plant nutritional analysis, fertilizer recommendation services, and advanced soil health diagnostics. NEIKER structures its soil-testing offer into seven specialised packages: Soil and Fertility (optimising fertilisation and liming schedules), Soil and Climate Change (organic matter, total carbon, and greenhouse gas emission indicators), Soil and Water (water retention curves and porosity assessments), Soil and Life (quantifying microbial biomass, activity, and biodiversity), Soil and Transition to Ecological Production (tailored assessments for farms converting to organic), Health Cards (integrating crop and soil indicators into ecosystem health diagnoses), and Threats to the Soil (erosion quantification studies). Plant tissue nutritional analysis and fertilization advisory reports further help growers fine-tune crop nutrition programmes.

NEIKER's infrastructure is among the most advanced in Spain for an agricultural research institute. The Derio Centre houses a Biosafety Level 3 (NBL-3/NCB-3) facility of 1,520 m² — designed and certified to handle infectious agents with high potential for respiratory transmission, including zoonotic pathogens classified in risk group 3. The complex also includes Biosafety Level 2 greenhouses equipped with climate-controlled containment for research on quarantine plant pathogens. Additional specialist areas include microbiology and immunology laboratories, molecular biology sections, a chromatography section, an analytical chemistry section, and animal experimentation areas rated at biosafety levels 2 and 3. A multidisciplinary team of more than 30 highly qualified scientists and technicians operates these facilities across both campuses.

NEIKER holds ENAC (Entidad Nacional de Acreditación) accreditation No. 615/LE 1321, which covers the carrying out of physical and chemical, microbiological, immunological, and molecular tests on agri-food products at the Derio Centre. ENAC is Spain's national accreditation body operating under ISO/IEC 17025 criteria, meaning this accreditation provides formal third-party assurance of technical competence. The institute also holds ISO 9001 certification (certificate ER-1201-2005, issued by AENOR and IQNet) for its R&D project management and technology transfer activities, as well as ISO 56001 certification (IDI-0009/2019) covering research, development, and innovation management across agri-food, livestock, and forestry domains. Since 2016, NEIKER has been a member of the Spanish Biological Alert Laboratory Network (RE-LAB), reflecting its role as a nationally recognised sentinel laboratory for biological threats.
